What Is A Gloss Meter Measuring? Though the answer to this seems simple (gloss), in truth, a gloss meter is specifically measuring a surface’s specular reflection gloss. Specular reflection essentially just means the amount that the surface works as a mirror due to its sheer glossiness. A surface’s ability to work as a mirror is contingent on its ability to reflect the same light back at you as you’ve projected onto it, so when you measure gloss, you’re really testing reflectivity. If you think about it, this is what we commonly think of gloss as in our minds, but now it’s put into somewhat scientific terms with “specular reflection”. How Does It Work? According to Newton’s Third Law, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Though this is one of his laws of motion, and in general this principle does not apply to light beams, in this case it sort of works. A gloss meter works by way of shooting a beam of light onto a surface that has the paint that you’re trying to test already applied to it.
